A modem converts the signals on your wired and wireless networks into the right kind of signal for your broadband connection. It’s not the same job as a router, which directs the information from your computers and devices to the internet, and vice-versa – a bit like a police officer directing traffic.
That said, the hub or router provided by most internet service providers is usually a combined modem/router, which does both jobs.
