A router directs information from your computers and devices to the internet, and vice-versa – a bit like a police officer directing traffic. It’s not the same job as a modem, which converts the signals on your wired and wireless networks into the right kind of signal for your broadband connection.
That said, the hub or router provided by most internet service providers is usually a combined modem/router, which does both jobs.
